It is nice to actually see a successful comic in connection with a celebrity, especially someone who comes across as being as good-natured as Jennifer Love Hewitt. Could this also work for, say, Eliza Dushku or Scarlett Johansson? In Hewitt’s case, she is well-versed in eerie storytelling from her long run on the TV series, “The Ghost Whisperer.” And the IDW comics based on the show are doing well too. As it turns out, “Music Box” just feels right from the get-go and ends up delivering like a good horror comic should.
Hewitt’s idea was to create a spooky series of stories surrounding a supernatural music box in the anthology style of the landmark TV series, “The Twilight Zone.” And, judging by Issue One, they’ve succeeded. Each issue will tell one story, and this is an excellent read. We start with “Details,” a story about a quiet detective who wishes he could stop crimes before they happen. Once he crosses paths with the music box, he gets that wish. The art by Michael Gaydos is appropriately moody for this hard-boiled crime story. Similar in style to Sean Phillips’s work on Ed Brubaker’s noir comics, Gaydos is a little lighter on the brush and provides just the right weight for the characters and pacing.
Scott Lobdell, a two-time Wizard award winner, provides a fast-paced story. The premise and the characters work well, but you sort of wish the action would slow down just a bit. The story delivers a tight yet meaty portrait of the main character, Oliver Kulpalski. Again, Gaydos’s art goes a long way in keeping that balance of giving you all the details you need while moving the story along. He manages to pack a lot of soul into Kulpalski’s NYC world, including some nice, spare panels set on the subway and in Central Park.
“Music Box” is set for a ten-issue run. Each issue will delve into some new aspect of the titular object as it moves from one unsuspecting owner to the next. Overall, it looks like it should be a fun journey.

Buzz about an impending breakup between Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jamie Kennedy is just that — buzz, according to the Ghost Whisperer star. “I’m not going to lie — it’s not annoying, it’s hurtful,” Hewitt told PEOPLE Saturday at the Children’s Institute Hosts Poker for a Cause in Commerce, Calif., to benefit Ghost Whisperer costar Camryn Manheim’s charity.
“It’s really hurtful that people say that,” says Hewitt, 30, who attended the event with her beau of 8 months, costar Jamie Kennedy. “Because he is like the most awesome person.” Adds Hewitt: “I really hate that people would make it seem like he’s not really a good guy, and not treating me well. He treats me very well.”
A recent report suggested that Kennedy, 39, is still hung up on a former flame while dating Hewitt, a report Hewitt’s rep dismissed as a false claim by a disgruntled former employee. “We are just trying to be really happy,” Hewitt says. “It makes it hard to do that when everybody is putting negative energy out there.” Kennedy, who stood beside Hewitt, added: “I am lucky to be with her. And I love her very much.”

Jennifer is on the cover of the October 2009 issue of “Shape” magazine!
Jennifer Love Hewitt may be rockin’ a bikini on our cover, but she has the same insecurities as every woman. “I’m a girl, after all!” says the 30-year-old actress. “For the most part, yeah, I’m happy with my body, but there are days when I’m like, ‘Ugh! Really? Why is it so hard to fit into my jeans?’ That’s when I say to myself, ‘I look this way because I’m supposed to. If we all looked the same, we’d be boring.'” Here, she reveals her stay-healthy-and-happy strategies as well as her workout that she uses to stay slim and confident.
Put your fridge on a diet. To keep her food choices healthy and fresh, Jennifer hits the supermarket every two days. “Instead of piling up food in my fridge that says ‘Come eat me!’ I keep enough for only a couple of days. And I rarely have treats around that might tempt me late at night, which is when I usually crave something really fattening. What am I going to do? Drive out at 11 at night just to satisfy a craving? No, that’s crazy.”
Always eat lunch. It’s no secret that over the last few years, young actresses have become fixated on being super thin, a trend Jennifer finds really disturbing. “Hollywood used to revolve around women with curves, like Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe,” she says. “But now it’s so different. Not that long ago, I went to this celebrity luncheon, and I was the only person in the room eating. The other girls looked at me like I hadn’t gotten the memo, but I was hungry! All of these girls were afraid that if someone saw them eating, it would be a disaster. It makes no sense at all.”
Give yourself a good talking-to. Ever since turning 30 in February, Jennifer’s been practicing the art of positive thinking. At night she says five things she finds sexy about herself. “I fall asleep feeling beautiful,” she says. “Then, in the morning, before I leave the house, I say five things I love about myself, like ‘You have really pretty eyes.’ That way I can go out into the world with that little bit of extra confidence. It’s a feel-good protein shake in my back pocket in case someone messes with me that day.”
Don’t give in to peer pressure. One place you’ll never see Jennifer hanging out is in a Hollywood hot spot with other stars. “I’m not a big party person,” she says. “The idea of working all day then shoving myself into a club with 150 sweaty people who have been drinking sounds like the worst idea ever! At the end of the day, I’d rather just hang out by myself, with my boyfriend [Ghost Whisperer co-star Jamie Kennedy], or with my family.”
Put a spark in your workout. Jennifer’s been dating Jamie for seven months, and they’ve helped each other get fitter. “He’s inspired me to improve my diet,” she says. “He has a salad with every meal, plus lots of fruit, fish, and vegetables.” Jennifer, in turn, has gotten him to exercise more. “Last summer we were in Monaco. Every morning we ran for 40 minutes through the streets of Monte Carlo. It was an amazing way to see the city. Now when we travel, we try to explore the places by running.”
